Recognizing this necessity, Kilimanjaro Search & Rescue (Kilimanjaro SAR) was established in 2016 in Moshi with a vision of turning Kilimanjaro into the epitome of safe mountaineering in Africa.

Time becomes of the essence during emergencies on high mountains, and each moment can make a difference.

Understanding the weight of this responsibility, Kilimanjaro SAR is thoroughly equipped and always on high alert. They have meticulously designed their system to ensure rapid and effective response:

• A strategic base in Moshi: This prime location allows for speedy response times and easier accessibility.
• High-altitude helicopters on standby: These helicopters are designed to function efficiently in thin air, ensuring they reach the required altitude swiftly.
• Medical experts trained for peak emergencies: The unique challenges presented by high-altitude crises demand specialized training, which Kilimanjaro SAR's team possesses.

This robust infrastructure ensures that, if needed, climbers receive professional assistance within an astonishing 15 minutes. This starkly contrasts with older systems, where help had to be summoned from distant locations, leading to undesirable delays.

Kilimanjaro SAR's vision isn’t confined to just emergency evacuations. Their holistic approach includes:

• Africa's first high-altitude medicine clinic: A pioneering initiative to cater to specific high-altitude health issues.
• Specialists at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Moshi: These professionals specialize in treating ailments arising from high altitude exposure.

Besides that, it's also paramount for climbers to understand the importance of comprehensive travel insurance. A policy that covers emergency evacuation up to 6,000 meters and subsequent medical care is non-negotiable.
